Windstopper® Fleece from W.L. Gore, prevents almost all evaporative and convective heat loss because it is absolutely windproof, very water resistant and yet extremely breathable. It is created by laminating a Teflon® membrane, very similar to the membrane used in Gore-Tex™, between two layers of fleece. The result is an extremely lightweight, comfortable fleece that provides an amazing amount of warmth. And, because the vapor permeability is extremely high, the fleece remains comfortable throughout a wide range of conditions and levels of activity.
  • Vapor permeable, windproof, lightweight and warm.
  • 3 dimensional design.
  • Earband covers the ears completely for protection from the wind.
  • Lycra® spandex trim cups the edge to create a snug seal.
  • Can be flipped up for ventilation.
  • All seams are very low profile to reduce pressure on the head.
  • Made in USA.

Simple and very functional. Nice, simple design that allows ears to be covered or uncovered. Spandex trim is very comfortable. I got this immediately after having my brain almost frozen with a normal fleece hat coming down from a very windy and exposed Mount Lafayette back in 1998. I bring this hat on just about every trip I take now. It's great for cold conditions during the day and sleeping at night. Wrt hats, I have never looked back - Windstopper® works and is a wonderful thing.

If you are wearing this with a helmet and concerned about hearing as Mark mentions above, you can always punch a few holes in the fabric where the ears are.

I agree that this is a very warm hat but I have one complaint: By having windstopper over your ears, it is quite hard to hear your partner when belaying. This is really only a problem if you are wearing it under a helmet where raising the ear flaps is difficult.

Warm as hell and fits well under a helmet. As said, hard to hear with it on, but I figure that will be with any windstopper hat. I think it looks a little goofy on, but who cares.
