Quote from Black Diamond's web site:

"You already know that a helmet is a must. But what you may not know is what kind of helmet? A traditional hardshell to protect your noggin from rock fall? A foam number that’s got an excellent ventilation system? Well, we’ve made this difficult choice easy for you with the Hemisphere. As a “hybrid helmet, that spans the gap between foam and hardshell and delivers the benefits of both, the Hemisphere is ultra durable and totally comfortable. The Hemisphere is constructed with EPS foam and a polycarbonate shell. We’ve wrapped the polycarbonate around the lower edge at the helmet to increase the durability. PLUS, this helmet’s got an incredible ventilation system to keep you cool and a modern design that’s both functional and looks great."

This was my first helmet purchased -- primarily because I found a good deal. But I have not been disappointed with my purchase. My second helmet was an Ecrin Roc, but I still often find myself reaching for the Hemisphere when going up.

My peripheral vision is not obstructed at all in this helmet, and only very little when looking up (depending on how it is positioned it on my head).

The helmet adjusts size easily with velcro tabs in back for circumference and with a tri-glide style strap around the chin. I find that it feels very comfortable and secure.

For summer climbing at the crags, it does get a bit warm. While there is some ventilation in the helmet, it is much better suited to climbing in cooler temps, in my opinion. The thick foam acts as a good insulator when the mercury drops.

Oh... and my favorite part... the blue color looks great with my blue Montrail ICE 9's! :-P
