The Alpine Titanium is Primus' lightest and smallest climbing stove (2.9 oz.) designed to compete with SnowPeak's Giga Power Stoves. Don't be fooled by the "titanium" in the name however, only the pot supports are titanium. It comes with a detachable Piezo Igniter for situations where you don't have matches.

Accolades:

  • Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking (2002): "The world's lightest and most compact stove."

I got this as an alternative to the relatively large MSR Dragonfly and even the Camping Gaz Turbo 270. Just about everyone I know in California uses a canister stove now, so I thought I would give it a shot since REI.com was having a blowout on these.

This thing burns like a champ at 36°F @ 12,000' ... if you can get it to light. At about 50' elevation, I can get the piezo igniter to light up 100% of the time, however, at 36°F and 12,000', I could only get the piezo igniter to work about 1 out of every 12 times. I didn't bring matches and had just about given up on it. Once it lit, I never let it go out ;-) I want to try this with matches / lighter and over 14,000' next. The pot supports are excellent, extending to 6 inches, as opposed to the SnowPeak Giga Power's 4 inch wide design. Although this has a nice rosewood knob, it would be nicer to have one of the lightweight longer metal ones on many stoves these days.

Probably common sense, but when melting snow for water, it's a lot faster if you just start with only snow the first pot and then always leave some hot water to assist in the melting of additional snow.

Even though the piezo igniter doesn't work well in the conditions I tried, I'm still giving this 5 stars b/c you don't get an igniter with any of the liquid fuel stoves. Just something to keep in mind.

This stove is absolutely one of my favorite items! I bought it 6 years ago when it was the only stove under 100g available. Price was back then horrible and it still is, but I never regret purchasing it! A friend of mine carved my initials to the stove base to make it even more unique.

About the performance then; It burns like damned!! I use it mainly in summer time backpacking and when climbing in the alps, in the summer that is. It works really well when above 4000m, but you do need to bring a cigarette lighter or similar to get it lit. Piezo ignition does not work well in altitude so you can take it away as well.

The stove foldes down to an extremely convenient plastic case the size of a cigarette box. Kettle base is a lot more stable than in most of the ultralight stoves, because of the foldability (is that a word?).

Only disadvantages I can see are, as usual, that gas stoves don't work that well in below freezing temperatures. I haven't had a possibility to test them in really high altitudes, but that should compensate with the low temperatures. The other con is that it has been really hard to find a proper hanging kit. I am now going to experiment with systems made by Bibler and Msr, although Msr system may need some modification because of the thicker base of the Primus Alpine Titanium stove.
