Overview

Munt PersMunt Pers
Munt Pers is a mountain in the Bernina Group of the Rhaetian Alps, situated in the South East of Switzerland near St Mortiz. Munt Pers is overlooked by the Eastern Alpine giants of Piz Bernina and Piz Palu, giving Munt Pers one of the most breathtaking summit panoramas of the Alps. A cable car to the Diavolezza Station, makes the summit of Munt Pers easily accessible to all via a gradual, not too demanding trail (white-red-white marked route). This combined with the excellent view, gives Munt Pers a fairly busy summit. The crowds can be avoided by taking an Alpine (white-blue-white) route to the summit, called Senda Dal Diavel “Speak of the Devil”. This is graded at T4, however the first section is graded at UIAA II, making it suitable for experienced hikers / scramblers only. Fixed ropes are provided at the most tricky sections for protection.

Getting There

Hiking
Munt Pers can be hiked from the Diavolezza Station. This is a short hike (approximately 1.5km) over fairly easy ground and is suitable for children. Take a cable car from Bernina Diavolezza to the upper Diavolezza Station and then follow the white-red-white marked route North West to the summit of Munt Pers.

For a more challenging hike, avoid using the cable car from the lower Bernina Diavolezza and hike up Valetta Da Diavolezza, following the sign posted trail to the upper Diavolezza Station.

Senda Dal DiavelThe Senda Dal Diavel ridge

Senda dal DiavelSenda Dal Diavel the is the left ridge
An excellent grade T4 ridge leads from Valletta da Diavolezza to the summit of Munt Pers. From the lower Bernina Diavolezza station, hike up Valletta da Diavolezza until you reach a sign post, including a blue and white sign stating Munt Pers to the right, estimating a time of 4 hours for the route. Follow this direction paying attention to the white-blue-white markers on various rocks. You will reach a mountain tarn, Lej da las Collinas, Senda Dal Diavel is the ridge running to the left of this.
Fixed RopesFixed ropes on the most difficult sections
The first section of the ridge is the most tricky, fixed ropes are provided and the climbing is at grade UIAA II. Sections of this are exposed and a head for heights is needed. Once the tricky first section has been climbed, the route continues to the summit along a much easier scramble to the summit of Munt Pers. A descent to the upper Diavolezza station via the easy red-white-red route makes an excellent round trip.

The Summit

The summit of Munt Pers provides an excellent view of the Bernina Group in very close proximity. Two huge glaciers run down Vadret da Morteratsch and Vadret Pers in front of Piz Bernina and Piz Palu respectively. The summit can be quite busy, owing to it being easily accessible from the upper Diavolezza station, but the summit is quite broad and provides plenty of room for you to sit down and take in the breathtaking panorama.
