Mt. Tamalpais, (Mt. Tam)

Mt. Tam is one of the SF Bay areas most prominent landmarks. It is the Marin County highpoint. Though diminutive in elevation it rises from sea level to 2,571'. It's the "local peak". I can see the bold east side less than 4 miles from the front of the house. Been hiking all over it for years. The mountain has a colorful history including a small gauge railroad that once wound its' way up the south side. Very popular with the mountain bikers and there is an outdoor amphitheatre for an annual Mountain Play. Being the dramatic east end of the Bolinas Ridge and rising abruptly in the center of the county just north of the Golden Gate the East Peak has towering views of the whole bay area. I just hiked the northeast ridge yesterday. Perched high above the teeming metropolitan vibes I was newly amazed to find myself up in the mind stopping heights again.
