Overview

Mittlerer Baerenkopf lays in the Glockner Gruppe in the Hohe Tauern National Park northeast from Grossglockner. There are three peaks with the name Baerenkopf. Grosser Baerenkopf (3396m), Mittlerer Baerenkopf (3356m) and Vorderer Baerenkopf (3249m). They lay in this position looking from northeast.

The Pasterze Glacier starts on the slopes of the Baerenkopfs and Johannisberg. If the weather is clear you get an unforgettable view on Grossglockner - 3798m (southwest), on Johannisberg - 3453m (west) and on Grosser Wiesbachhorn - 3564m (northeast).

Getting There

My father on the glacier
You can get to Mittlerer Baerenkopf or the other two Baerenkopf by two ways. From Franz Josefs Höhe (2451m) through Oberwalder Hütte (from south) or from Moosersperre (northern side). It is easy to reach eighter Franz Josefs Höhe or Moosersperre by car.

Red Tape

You must pay for using the road (called: Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse) if you are coming to Franz Josefs Höhe from Heiligenblut. Tickets for cars/motorcicles: Daily ticket: €28/€18 15-day ticket: €35/€25 30-day ticket: €45/€35 (With tickets valid for more than one day you can pass the gate several times without paying again. This is good if you sleep in the lower regions but want to climb in the Glockner Gruppe more than once.) Some informations about the Grossglockner High Alpine Road (Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse): Lenght: 48km Number of bends: 36 Maximum height of the road: 2504m Opening times and hours: From the beginning of May until 15th of June: 6 am - 8 pm From the 16th of June until the 15th of September: 5 am - 9.3 pm From the 16th of September until the end of October: 6 am - 7.30 pm Last admission: 45 min. before night closure.

Camping

According to the heights of these mountains and that you can find ice everywhere there are no camping possibilities in the heigher regions.
OberwalderhütteOberwalder Hütte (2972m)
You can have a camp in Heiligenblut or in Moosersperre or in any other of the nighbouring villages. There is also a sleeping possibility in Franz Josefs Höhe (2451m), Karl Volkert Haus (2150m), Glocknerhaus (2136m) or Pasterzen Haus (2119m). These houses and motels are on the way coming from Heiligenblut. Oberwalder Hütte (2972m) is an other possibility. it is about 2-3 hours walk and climb from Franz Josefs Höhe.
