Hoher Tenn

Overview

Hoher Tenn is located on a northern secondary ridge of the Hohe Tauern range, between Fuscher Tal and Kapruner Tal(valleys). It is separated from its higher neighbour Grosses Wiesbachhorn on the south by Wiesbachscharte(3031m),and followed on the ridge northwest-and northeastwards by less independent elevations only. As part of the alpine main ridge,Hoher Tenn cosists of cristalline rocks and decorated by smaller rests of glaciers on its north face. Despite of its superb shape seen from the south,rocks are loose owing to advanced melting of permafrost in the upper region of the mountain.

Getting There

a/Kaprun is a well-known hiking-, mountaineering-,and ski resort. Approach from Salzburg on motorway A10/road #311 98km. Railway station Fürth-Kaprun is 3 km. From the village to trailhead at Kesselfall Alpenhaus further 10km by bus/car,free parking.Till Mooserboden(reservoir,2036m) you can get by combination of bus and a special funicular railway. b/Fusch: also on the road #311 till Bruck an der Glocknerstrasse(railway station),from here 10km.

Normal Route

a/From Kesselfall Alpenhaus If you are ready to climb the almost 1000m to the reservoir(or reversed,in case of missing the last vehicle),there is a path as well,though hardly anyone uses it.(cca.2:20mins,not marked.) At the dam of the resrvoir folllow the marked trail #723 called "M.Hirschel-Weg"towards Gleiwitzer Hütte(hut). Ascend on grassy terrain and later on scree to the branch to Kempsenkogel. Turn the right and reach the NW ridge of Hoher Tenn. Continue following the line of the ridge crossing smaller adjacent peaks as Bauernbrachkogel(3125m) and Kleiner Tenn(3158m)on scree and on short parts very steep rocks.( difficult places are made safe by steal wires). The summit region of the mountain is snow-covered for the most part of the year,if it is melted take care of loose rocks.(cca. 4 hours from Mooserboden) b/From Fusch Take the marked hiking trail#725 to Gleiwitzer hut(2174m,accomodation;cca4 hours).From there follow the trail #723 towards Mooserboden.Walk through alpine pastures to the cirque called Ochsenkar. Cross a firn field and climb very steep in a ravine(supported by iron bows and wire) to the pass Untere Jaegerscharte(2470m). Turn the right and continue on the ridge on grass and easy rocks(iron chains on some exposed places)till the branch to Kempsenkogel. From here see at the approach from Kaprun.

Red Tape

The area is part of Nationalpark Hohe Tauern-the rules of the NP are authoritative.

Camping

There are camping sites in Kaprun and Fusch. In the national park camping in the terrain is in principle not allowed. Note that there is no accomodation at lake Mooserboden.
