Cima Mutta

Overview

Cima Mutta is not a proper summit, it's simply the Eastern shoulder of Corno D'otro, the elegant summit that shapes the skyline at SW of the village of Alagna, the most famous village of Valsesia.

Mutta in the local dialect means summit and "Cima" has the same meaning in Italian. This pinnacle was once called "La Mutta", "The Summit". The actual denomination is an alteration coming from a misunderstanding of the original name.

This small summit is often reached by hikers cause it offers spectacular views in all the directions. The flanks of cima mutta sinks in fact vertiginously over alagna and Riva Valdobbia, making the sight from its top quite impressive.

The only approachable flank of the mountain is the South one, facing Vogna valley, where a pleasant trail leads to the top crossing a small wood and many lovely meadows till the easy rocks of the final ridge.

Getting There

Follow the highway A26, Milano-Genova, and take the exit of Romagnano Sesia. Take the main road of Valsesia, SS299, and drive till the village of Riva Valdobbia. At the end of the village take the direction of Valle Vogna (signs) and reach the village of Ca' Janzo, where you can park your car.

Reaching the summit

The trail starts less than 50 meters before the building of Ca' Janzo (1300m). Just after a few meters the path splits in two. Follow the path on the right, more narrow, signed by the number 10.
Soon you reach Alpe Selveglio (1536m), a nice settlement in a clearing with some interesting Walser buildings. Cross Selveglio and continue again on the path on the right, East (always signed by number 10).
After a steep mule track and a lovely grove of larches you reach another clearing with a small hut, Alpe Poesi(1715m), almost abandoned, with a thrift fountain built in an old buthtub (something you wil never see on the rich meadowsmountains of Valle D'Aosta and of Trentino Alto Adige).
At the end of the wood another abandoned settlement, Alpe Le Piane(1832m), welcomes you on a fantastic balcony where the sight of Palanca range and of Corno Carestia it's a good introduction to the Panorama offered by the summit.
The path goes on crossing the balcony to reach the steep slope under the final ridge. Moving first toward West than Back to East the trail leads to the summit, crossing almost entirely the flank of the mountain above Le Piane.
An Iron panel, called in Italian "Rosa delle cime", Rose of the summits, gives room to the book to sign and indicates the name of the beautifull mountains all around, with Monte Rosa that dominates.

Accomodations

Several possibilities (hotels, bad and breakfast, houses to rent...) for all the budgests are present in Riva, Alagna and all along the valley.
