Overview
The Monte Pasubio is really worth to be climbed ... historical memories, landscapes, great variety of environments and flora ecc.The most famous route to get the Generale Papa refuge (Porte del Pasubio) is, without doubts, the Strada delle Gallerie (Road of Tunnels): very fine, yes, very interesting, yes ... but with 2 little imperfections (as for my feelings of course) :
- not so much panoramic : only the second half, on the ridge, gives space to the sight
- a little off the beaten track ... so if you decide to come down along one of the fine paths/routes to Pian delle Fugazze, you have to walk a lot to get back the car.
So, once done the Strada delle Gallerie the best way to get back is the Strada degli Scarrubi (some say Scarubbi)
it is a real, unpaved, road (along this road in the far november 1977 I went, driving my car, to Rifugio Papa), very panoramic on the Acqua Fredda valley (in the high part) and on the very steep east side of the Canevon di Campiglia.
Now only Rifugio Papa wardens can drive a car there, we, poor normal people, must walk along it ...
Getting There
If someone wants to make the anticlockwise trip (Scarrubi on - Gallerie down):The starting point of the road/route is the same as for Strada delle Gallerie : same car parking !
So : Passo Xomo (1058m), 1,5 km of road up to Bocchetta Campiglia (1216m).
On the left the Strada delle Gallerie, straight on the Strada degli Scarrubi.

 | Down for some hundreds meters to the fork for Malga Campiglia, now on along the wide channel of Caneve di Campiglia, 6km and 12 hairpin bends lead to the high part (very fine views) |

A small advice :
- the short cuts in the Canevon di Campiglia don't allow to save much time but your knees will ask you why you decided to abandon the road ...
- the last shortcut looks shrewd ... crossing to the right the woods and avoiding to loose altitude and need to regain it ... false!
so ... follow the road walking with your hands in your pockets

warning ...CORRIERE DEL VENETO.IT - 07 gennaio 2010 VICENZA - Un escursionista di Valdagno (Vicenza), F.V., 35 anni, ha perso la vita dopo essere scivolato per 400 metri in un canale. L'uomo stava percorrendo con un amico la strada degli Scarubi, la rotabile militare risalente al primo conflitto mondiale che conduce al rifugio Papa, sul Pasubio, quando è avvenuto l'incidente, quasi sicuramente a causa del fondo ghiacciato. I due amici, attrezzati con ramponi e piccozze, si trovavano in un tratto in cui la strada è intagliata nella roccia, a circa 1.750 metri di quota, quando l'escursionista ha perso l'equilibrio sparendo nel ripidissimo canale sottostante. Immediato l'allarme dell'amico al 118, attorno alle 13. Sul posto sono state inviate le squadre del Soccorso alpino di Schio e Arsiero e l'elicottero di Trento. La salma, individuata e ricomposta, è stata recuperata dall'eliambulanza utilizzando un verricello, trasportata a valle e affidata al carro funebre. Il Soccorso alpino ricorda come in questi giorni le condizioni delle nostre montagne siano particolarmente critiche e come anche i sentieri più familiari si trasformano in pericolosissime lastre di ghiaccio, vanificando talvolta l'utilizzo di attrezzatura tecnica.
