Picnic in the Sky: Autumn on Harvard

Picnic in the Sky at 14,423 ft / 4,396 m

Morning comes later and evening comes sooner.

The air is crisp and cool and is spiced with the scent of golden aspen and willow.

The sky is azure blue, so bright it almost hurts the eyes. Not a cloud in the sky.

The Horn Fork Basin tundra is crisp and bright orange.

The buck proudly displays his full rack of antlers, ready to face his rival.

Wisps of snow frost the high north faces.

Lunch on the third highest peak in Colorado at 14,423 feet / 4,396 m in the fall… The manchego is from Spain. The Tuaca is from Italy. The raspberries are from California. But the scenery? It’s distinctly Colorado.

This is heaven for me. The calendar says summer, but already the crowds have dissipated as the first hints of winter are in the air. This is fall in the Colorado highcountry. There is no place I’d rather be, and no better time to be here.
