Taking the standard route to the North Peak

Decided to book on up to Robert Louis Stevenson Park in Napa County and do the regular fireroad route to the top of St. Helena (4,343'). Fact of the matter is the regular route is about the only way anybody in their right mind would choose to hike this mountain. The upper slopes are as much as 30-45 degrees, covered with loose volcanic sandy rubble and entirely well armored with thick chaparral, close knit little oaks and the occasional nasty scree field. I suppose you could pull yourself up it grabbing onto the shrubbery if you could get between it. The Eiger North Face might be easier! lol!
Didn't expect it to be so hot. This is a 10 mile round trip shuffle mostly all in the sun on an unspeakably boring long switchback slog. But who's complaining. It was a nice workout and the views {on this day} extended over 100 miles from Snow Mtn. in the north Coast Range to Mt. Diablo, the foggy Golden Gate and Mt. Tamalpais to the south as well as on out to the marine layer over the Pacific.

Mt St Helena

The summit is a bit of a disappointment with all the cell tower equipment.

The one interesting thing up there was the old monument that was dedicated to the "Russian" residents of the north coast. Apparently, it was originally nearer the coast but was re-located to that summit for some reason. Then, when the cell tower work was underway, that monument marker was again relocated but I'm not certain if they returned it to the summit. I think that someone told me that they had but I've not been up there for years.

The marker, similar to a headstone of a cemetery, was dated roughly about 1920. So its nearly a 100 years old.
