Description

The Monte Disgrazia 3678m is an imposing and prominent mountain in the Lombardia in northern Italy. The mountain is close-by the Bernina mountain range and near the Swiss border. Disgrazia is one of the most popular summits of Italy and the highest mountain of the Val Masino Alps. Climbing Monte Disgrazia is an ambitious trip, demanding endurance and experiences in climbing..

Our ascent:

We stayed overnight in the Rifugio Ponti 2559m (Ponti mountain hut) in the Preda Rossa valley (Valle di Preda Rossa). Early in the morning we went on a mountain path to the beginning of the Preda Rossa glacier (ghiacciaio di Preda Rossa). This Glacier is not large any longer, but it has some crevasses, it should be rope up. We traversed the glacier northward to the point “Sella di Poida 3387m”, where the northwest ridge begins. This is a high alpine rock-ridge with UIAA climbing in the II-III degree of difficulty. It had still snow on the ridge and that was difficult to climb, the conditions were not ideal for us. We climbed slowly and carefully with crampons up to the most difficult place, this point is called “Cavallo Bronzo” (=brazen horse). Cavallo Bronzo is a smooth and slippery ledge. After that it will be easier and we were soon on the summit. We were happy and proud that we have reached the summit. But no, the tour is only done if we are down again… the descent is mostly more difficult. But we have also descended well and we arrived healthy in the valley.
