Proud Mary

Proud Mary

Nope, ya don't have to be born on the bayou to enjoy this formation. "Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis, Pumped a lot of pain down in New Orleans, But I never saw the good side of the city 'Till I hitched a ride on a riverboat Queen..." This is the western profile of Steamboat Rock, making permanent waves at the mouth of Oak Creek Canyon near Sedona, Arizona. The tower above the "bridge deck" is called The Throne. Most folks make it up (as far as) the bridge deck, which is capped with Apache limestone. The remainder of Steamboat Rock is composed of Schenebly Hill sandstone. Nearby, the Jim Thompson Trail leads to the southern base of Steamboat in a short 0.7-mile jaunt from where this picture was taken. November 19, 2009
