Route Climbed: West slope of Barcroft, then the road. Date Climbed: Dec. 25, 1976
Tried to climb it Xmas 1974 but turned around at Barcroft with bad weather coming in. Spent the night on top Xmas '76 with Fritz and David. Spent the night on top in the summer of 1975 with Markle and Fritz. Climbed it in Oct. 1989 with JPL hiking club, summer '74 with Fritz and ???.
First tried to climb it in the spring about 1970, but snow blocked the road just past the Bristlecones and we only made it as far as Barcroft before we tired out - we had driven all night from San Diego to get there and had no sleep.
Route Climbed: The Road Date Climbed: September 13, 2004
After a failed attempt on Ritter the day before I decided my ego needed a peak with a high probability of success. This was the mountain for me then! Tough road, passenger cars beware. Amazing views of the eastern Sierra on this clear day. Well worth the time if your in the area.
Route Climbed: Barcroft Road Date Climbed: July 18, 2004
Hiked with Balajisv and Brian under a fairly clear sky. The hike to the summit, including picture taking and messing with the fat marmots on their rock pile, took me a minute or two under three hours. Skipping the switchbacks on the summit massif is clean if you take the decent use trail on the far left side of the face.
Route Climbed: Barcroft Road Date Climbed: July 19, 2003 Sucess!
This is an easy hike, though you should acclimatize before hand as it is about five hours of hiking at altitudes > 12K. The most difficult thing about this hike was the drive to the gate.
Did this with my family many years ago. I asked my Dad what altitude sickness was and he told me to run and find out. I did and I did! Sick as a dog... but I still remember the bristlecone pines.
Route Climbed: Westguard Pass Approach from the West Date Climbed: July 7, 2004
Hit the trailhead at 8:00am and tagged the summit at 11:10am. Left the summit at 12:00pm and got back to the car at 2:50.
I enjoyed hiking up White Mountain although it was not very hard. I did not believe it was 14 miles roundtrip but it turned out to be every bit of it. Somehow or another both the way there and the way back seemed to be low grade uphill. Saw loads of Marmots and a goat or a deer.
White Mountain definitely has a distinct beauty to it although I would not consider it rugged. I had a good time. A couple who had summitted a couple of days before reported feeling some serious electricity in the air as a thunderstorm moved in on the summit and below it.
Route Climbed: White Mountain Road Date Climbed: June 19, 2004
Little snow was left from the storm a day earlier except on the north face of every rock on the ground. Ideal weather and not very windy at the top. Several gliders flew up and away from Owens Valley while we were at the summit. Outstanding views in all directions. Truly an outstanding summit.
I hiked/ran both ways on this day and started from Patriarch Grove Fork. Lots of thunder and then snowing on the way down. Read my trip report "Caught under Thunder Storm ". It tells how scared I was and why.

On this hike I bagged my first 14'er! Took about 5.5 hrs to reach the summit from the trail beginning 2 miles below the Barcroft Facility. The last 1000 ft to the summit were the toughest.. I had to lay down and rest a few minutes about every 40 ft in elevation that we ascended. There were incredible views from the summit.. the kind of views I had only seen from an airplane before. It was cold.. dry.. and generally uncomfortable :) .. but the weather was relatively benign!
On the way back down at around 13,500 ft I yakked my guts out a few times.. got a good abdominal workout from that, though.

Brought 2 east coast friends up to the summit. Spent the previous day around Bristle Cone Pine Forest to acclimate. A beautiful day with 10-15 mph winds and temps in the upper 30s and low 40s. Encountered a few snow flurries on the way back down. The road was still covered by snow near one of the last switchbacks near the summit and had to do a little scrabbling up the rocks. A great but challenging 'First 14er' for each of us.
I went and climbed it on the road today. Great hike/run. I enjoyed crystal clear skies, although it was cold.. Needed to cut about .15 from top as the road is covered with ice/snow.

Drove to the trailhead a few miles below Barcroft Station without any problems. No snow on the road but occasional patches on the sides. My friend and I rode bikes from the trailhead for about 5 miles and decided to go on foot from there. The snow and mushy dirt road made uphill climbing on bikes very taxing and not worth it. At the 12,700 ft level, my friend decided to turn back since he was tired. I gave him food and water and we rested a bit to make sure he was OK.
Very windy and cold most of the road but the wind subsided on the switchbacks up to the summit. Not a cloud in the sky. Patches of snow still were on the switchbacks. Since I was wearing my bike shoes which snow easily entered, I bypassed the switchbacks by going straight up the rock scree and made the summit at 10:15 a.m. No crampons or ice axes were required on this route. It was very, very windy and I was alone at the summit. Beautiful views of the Sierras to the West and Death Valley to the East!
Snowed hard in morning. Hiked/Ran road from Patriarch Grove Fork up to summit. About .15 from summit, there is a large, steep and icey drift that covers the road. It is practically impossible to go around it. No tracks of any kind are over the drift. I cut straight up the bare rocks and easy to hike/climb mountainside. I hiked toward summit using GPS and fluked into hitting the (clear) road again, and hiked the last .1 to the top. The register is in a box in front of the building. No summit view for myself this day-all cloud covered. Mostly just drifts on the road from Barcroft on up and easily to cross except for the drift that is .15 from the summit..

The snow covered the road and forced us to park the truck early and walk an extra 10 miles. Cold weather came in very quick and unexpected, I'll be better prepared next time.
