Ridge traverse Hocheck-Mittespitze-Sudspitze
Ridge traverse completed on second attempt (solo this time). Approach in sunny day via Grunstein klettesteig and Watzmnannhaus, night in Hocheck bivac. Next dy very cloudy, misty weather, low visibility but no snow....
Having attempted this with a friend in July 2011, but only able to reach Hocheck due to the weather, I did the traverse this year. Started on the Friday going up to the Watzmannhaus, took around 3hrs with great views of the Berchtesgaden valley and surrounding mountains such as the Hoher Goell. A rather packed hut but still managed to get some sleep, then got up around 0530 to see the sunrise and set off at 0630. Took an hour and a half to reach Hocheck then set off on the traverse. Did it free, without via ferrata gear (though I did make use of the steel rope and spikes at times!), due to climbing experience here in the UK - I felt confident at this sort of grade though there were two or three downclimbs where you had to be very careful. A rare day in the Alps with dawn-to-dusk blue skies and no clouds in the vicinity so great views of the surrounding Berchtesgadener Alps and further-away central Alps, I guess I was looking at Grossglockner but wasn't sure. 36 mins Hocheck-Mittelspitze, the trickiest part just after Hocheck, then 1hr50 to Sudspitze which had more in the way of tricky downclimbs. Worth it though - best views were on the Sudspitze, including a view down to Konigssee. Then for the horrible bit... a very nasty 3 hour downhill scree slog to just above the Wimbachgrieshutte. Didn't enjoy that at all but the rest of the route made it worth it. Finally an easy just-under-2-hour stroll back to Wimbachbrucke. Glad to have done it on such a great day!
Winter ascent. Parked in Konigsee and hiked up to the Watzmannhaus. Winterraum was open but Jan thought it was far too comfy with its beds, fireplace and blankets so we moved on. Slogged up the shadow of the mountain to the little Schutzehutte on the summit. Stuck there from sunset after 1700 to dawn at 0700. Thank Christ we brought whiskey.
Its more of an emergency one, three little benches inside it and a table. Cold, cold, cold. Worth it! Didn't meet other mountaineers till the next day.

Watzmann To Inglostadter
Headed up to the Watzmannhaus in a couple of hours arriving at 20 00. They appearred to be a bit annoyed by the late resevationless arrival. Teaming up with some Austrians, met on the way up, made a late start. This ment getting stuck behind hundreds of fat scared Germans getting great valve from their brand new Via Ferrata kit. Despite leaving the hutte at sunrise did not get to the Sudspitze until 13:00. Great views on a an extremely clear and warm day. The scree desent to Weimbachtal was the trickiest part of the massif. Through the Deaddog Gallery to the Inglostadter hutte arriving about 18:30, a little bit delirious (heat, length of walk and pounding from the Rock under foot).

traverse
I slept the day before in the Watzmannhaus. It ran the day before in the afternoon and night, but in the morning the rock was dry. I climbed the Hocheck, Mittelspitz and Südspitze and descended to Wimbachgrieshütte. It was a wonderful trip for me and in nice weather.

Hocheck
I had slept in the Watzmannhaus, and then went up to the Hocheck summit in the early morning. Short, easy hike. Some snow on the trail already. Decided not to continue to the mittelspitze as I did't have any gear with me and it seemed to have ice on it on the steeper parts. Went down to Ramsau and up the Blaueishut where I climbed Hochkalter the next day.

Watzmann, 1993 and 1994
In 1993, on July 1st or 2nd, I went as far as Hocheck on a splendid day - the afternoon colors were beautiful when I arrived at the summit. In 1994 I did the Mittelspitze, by the normal route via Watzmannhaus as well. The weather wasn't quite so glorious this time.

Route Climbed: ridge-traverse
The two of us started at the Wimbachbruecke at 4am and reached the Watzmannhaus at 6.30 am - just on time to have a headstart on the crowds that started from there. Traversed Hocheck, Mittelspitze and reached Suedspitze at 9.40am. The descent to Wimbachgrieshuette is not all that pleasant. The upper part has plenty of loose rock while the trail in the lower part was partially destroyed by water. The 12k stroll back to Wimbachbruecke was very nice again and didn't feel as long as I thought it would.

Watzmannhaus - Hocheck - top
2 days of worst weather - aiting - at the 3rd day successful!
Dayhiked the traverse Wimbachbruecke - Watzmannhaus - Hocheck - Mittel - Suedspitze - Wimbachgrieshuette - Wimbachbruecke. Sunny day with clouds drifting up from the E-face made for a spectacular scenery.
Started from Wimbachbrücke at 05.00 and did the traverse over the ridge to Wimbachbrücke via Schoener Fleck as a daytrip - wiil be back some day, Kederbacher?
Went up to the Watzmannhaus with my mother and father in August and dropped mom off there. Dad and I continued on to Hocheck but because of the time didn't move across to the Mittel or Sudspitze. Clouds were covering the summit most of the way but we broke out as we got up top for a little. Mittelspitze looked amazing with a fresh dusting of a couple of inches of snow (in August!). Good day.
