Interesting...

seeing that huge cornice between Signalkuppe and Zumsteinspitze. When walking up there a few years earlier, I had no idea!

This is how it looks from up there:

It's a good thing we stayed well away from that edge!

Re: Interesting...

Hi Rob, about a week after I took the photo I was standing there too and stayed at the Margherita hut. Great experience!
About the cornice: you are right indeed. Later, in the summer of 2016, I heared a group of 2 or 3 climbers went to close to the edge. The cornice broke (also due to the warm weather) and they all fell down the east face and died. I have to look up the news article about it. Really a sad story...

Cheers

Re: Interesting...

I'm trying to find the news article but they all state something different. One talks about falling snow from above, another one about the cornice breaking and another one states it was during the ascent of Zumsteinspitze. I'm a bit puzzled about what actually happened right now...

Re: Interesting...

This article has plenty of background details, and it fits with both your picture and mine, which is why I believe the author is well informed.

I'll second Rob's comments...

Great photo Lodewijk - as Rob says we had no idea what was there. We also had superb visibility so no risk of straying too far over.
Lovely mountain which competes with Mont Blanc for being my favourite of all mountains. And that east face is really quite something... over 2013/14 I got to look at it from every direction apart from beneath (which I'd like to do some day...)
best wishes Mark

Thanks Mark. My Monte Rosa trip in 2015 is also one of my all-time favourites. Especially spending the night in the Margehrita Hut was great. (you can spot it on the photo in fullsize). I can really recommend visiting the Monte Moro pass or Macugnagna down in the valley. The views in real life are even more spectacular. Happy Climbing Mark & Cheers.
