Aurora Borealis during impact...

Aurora Borealis during impact of a massive X17 class Solar CME that took place in October of 2003. In anticipation of the event I hiked Mt. St. Helena with my brothers and waited. Around local midnight someone threw the switch and the sky lit up like a toaster oven.

Dream

Fantastic Aurora shot clay! That event was also visible here in Croatia but I didn't know about it till it became news and then it was too late, of course. I was so mad and disappointed about not knowing about it and missed opportunity because on this latitude this happens very rarely. When is next coronal mass ejection? :-)

Cheers

Not Bad

I really have to admit that I have never seen something like this. Is this comparable to the polar lights?

But of course this is an amazing pic. PERFECT SHOT !!!

Clay,

This is not exactly a mountain photo, but with that colours and the efford to photograph it...who cares indeed! Very rare shot. Congratulations.

Honest? Is this real?

Hi Clay, I simply can't believe this beauty to be real... Or maybe I'm just being jealous about it ;-) ... It's a wonderful shot and an incredible experience, thanks for sharing it.

Sorry about the vote

Although a great shot--to me it has little to do with the mountain culture.

He went up into the hills, Ham, in pursuit of a beautiful dream. That's got something to do with mountain culture, hasn't it? Or is there some severely practical purpose in mountaineering that I've been missing?

Re: Sorry about the vote

If he took the pic from on top of a mountain then it's a mountain pic; further, climbing the mountain is what gave him the great shot. There are two views in mountain photography: that of the mountain and what you see when on the mountain.
