Where it all started  Sucess!

First time of many was via the class 2 tourist route from the Sandstone Quarry pullout. The best route is from Calico Basin, ascending Brownstone Canyon and gaining the main ridge from the back. Probably the most visited peak in the Las Vegas area, but I'll always have a soft spot for Turtlehead as it was my first U.S. summit.

Short but steep  Sucess!

I climbed this one day in February, 2003. I don't remember the date. A nice, warm day.

Nice day out  Sucess!

Stole away during a work trip to Vegas for this nice hike. Sleet, snow, high winds and sun made for a fine day out. Someone posting here called it "boring" ..: well, it ain't technical but said person's a fucking philistine.

Intro to RRCNCA  Sucess!

Winter 2013

Climbed solo via the trail and descended via the West Gully route. There is a fun contrast between the wilderness and the city from the top!

Nice getaway  Sucess!

Cool little hike and getaway from the strip. Can even pick your own trail for a bit of scrambling up the wash. Been to vegas many times and never ventured out there, definitely worth it!

Beats the Strip  Sucess!

Tired of the Strip? Head to Red Rock Canyon NCA, go up Turtlehead, look down on Las Vegas and smile, knowing you're in a better place.

The best part of my trip to Vegas  Sucess!

The contrast of terrain to my home in the Southern Appalachians was very refreshing...I only wish that I could've hit up a couple more summits in the area.

First peak!  Sucess!

My wife and I made this our very first mountain hike and our first peak as well. Got a bit lost on the descent but still an extraordinary day!

Fun and great views  Sucess!

Nice scramble up the wash to the ridge. Great views.

Again on 1/7/08, with dramatic clouds and snow at the top.

Again on 6/11/10, with my sister to "welcome" her new husband to Vegas.

Again in 2012 with some friends.

Again on 11/15/14 as part of loop of Red Cap, Grey Cap, and Turtlehead. I approached Turtlehead from Brownstone Basin and slogged up the back to reach the summit.

Again on 11/22/14 as part of a loop of Red Cap and Turtlehead.

Stuck in Vegas, found someything to do.   Sucess!

Snowed the day before, about 4" near the summit, nice little hike when needing a hike while stuck in a hellhole like Vegas.

It's a summit  Sucess!

How sad that this is the only peak in Red Rock with an official trail to the summit ... it also happens to be one of the most boring.

Xmas escape  Sucess!

Escaped for the morning from Christmas with the in-laws in Vegas. Nice hike -- apparently the only non-technical peak in Red Rock so sees a lot of use. Tried scrambling up First Canyon a few days later but got stuck near the top.

First of two peaks on the day  Sucess!

I got a late start on the day, as it was almost noon when I began. When I saw the amount of cars at the parking area (nearly the entire lot was full) I almost turned around...but I'm glad I didn't. While I didn't get a chance to enjoy solitude, it seems that more than 90% of people barely make it beyond the first hundred yards of the trailhead. I passed less than a dozen people on the way up, and even had the summit to myself for about 20 minutes before a couple more people joined me. Great views in all directions -- and, unlike the view from (most of) the Springs, I had a clear view of Lake Mead. One or two short sections of fun, easy scrambling and worth the trip. I'm sure it's best enjoyed midweek, early in the morning (I don't think you could pay me to do this on a weekend). Up in 1 hr. 15 min. and down in 45 min., then off to White Rock Spring Peak.
