Black Mountain Summit  Sucess!

From the summit of Black Mountain, getting down the use trail going east across the ridge to Split isn't too bad. But, then the bushwhacking begins. If you lose the very thin "trail" to Split at all, the bushwhacking can get bad very quickly. For the most part, the trail stays directly on top of the ridge and rarely deviates, but it can still be difficult to follow. It's easier to follow on the final climb to the summit where there are more options. There isn't much shade on this route, so best to do it on a cooler day. Not August!

Bivy Adventure  Sucess!

Started from Black Mtn summit at about 1PM. After dropping down to the use trail, we bushwacked the long ridge to Split. Erin suggested we turn around (3PM) at the last bump but Jon and I were all for pushing on. After summiting, we got back to the "road" just at dark only to quickly lose it. After stumbling around in the dark for a while, we chose to build a camp fire and bivy. Once the sun came up after 11 long hours, it was a quick 30 minutes back to the car.

KRV Hiking Club Goes to Split  Sucess!

After completing Bohna Peak, I met my friends ( Kern River Valley Hiking Club ) at the Split Mountain trailhead. I was happy to see that the turnout was very good and it included 13 hikers. Split Mountain (6835’) is listed at 8 miles round trip to with 3300' of elevation gain. The view is amazing on Split, and the bushwhacking is fun. On this day we completed a Split -Black Loop where we left shuttle vehicles at the Black Mountain saddle.
