Johannisberg

Overview

The Johannisberg is a beautiful snowmountain at the border of Carinthia - Salzburg in Austria. On this mountain springs the famous Pasterzeglacier. It is a polpulair mountain because the great view around. From the summit you look over the glocknergroup and to the Grossglockner. You can also see the Grossvenediger en the Gr. Wiesbachhorn and many other great sides. The climb by the normal way is not very heavy, but there is also a very nice N-E face to climb


This mountain was first climbed in 1844 by G. Banerle and friends.

Getting There

In Austria you go to Heiligenblut. From there you go over the Glocknerstrasse, a famous highway, to the Frans Jozef Hohe were you can park. You can come there by bus also. Then you go to the Oberwalderhutte 2973m. From this you you start at the normal way by getting on the Rifflwinkel Glacier and follow these to the Obere Odenwinkelscharte. From the Scharte climb up the snowridge to the summit. You can easely descent by the s-w- Ridge back to the hut or to the Kleiner Burgerstall and down to the Pasterze back to the Fr. J. Hohe.
A nice alternatiev is climbing the N-E face in 50-60 degrees snow. A good climb taking a few hours.
The best map for the Johannisberg is the Alpenvereinskarte no. 40 Grossglocknergruppe.

The best time to climb is from june-semptember.
