Cima Grostè

Overview

Cima Grostè is the easiest peak of the central Brenta. It can be easily reached from Passo Grostè which itself can be reached by cablecar. You only have to climb about 500m but then are awarded fine views of the northern and eastern Brentapeaks as well as the Dolomites in the far east and Adamello and Presanella to the west.
Due to it's proximity to passo Grostè quite a lot of people climb it. Most of them, however, leave the trail before the summit to turn towards the famous Ferrata delle Bocchette Alte which runs around and over the famous Brenta peaks. We were alone on top during the second week of September.

Getting There

Take the Brenner Motorway A22 to the exit Bozen (Bolzano) South where you take S38 in direction of Meran (Merano) for a short way. Get off on S42 in the direction of Eppian (Appiano) and on to Medelpass (Passo di Mendola). Drive down from the pass and stay on the road until Dimaro where you turn left on SS239. This climbs to Passo Campo Carlo Magno (and on to Madonna di Campiglio). At the pass take the cablecar to Passo Grostè (2442m)where the climb towards Cima Grosè starts.

Red Tape

No permits required. Like all Brenta peaks Cima Grostè belongs to the Parco Adamello Brenta and thus you should behave like in any other natural park.

When To Climb

Best season is May through September. Will get very tricky in snow.

Accomodation

There are campgrounds in the valley (Val Rendena at Madonna di Campiglio and Pinzolo).
The Brenta is known for its network of Rifugios. You can at Rifugio Graffer al Grostè some 100m of altitude below Passo Grostè. Rifugio del Tucket is the nearest one within the central Brenta and in case you want to use the Ferrata delle Bocchette Alte this will probably your next destination.
