"After the first glass, you see things as you wish they were. After the second, you see things as they are not. Finally, you see things as they really are, which is the most horrible thing in the world."

Tops TraverseClimbed Flattop, Ptarmigan, Notchtop, Knobtop, and Gabletop. Due to weather, we decided to descend down Tourmaline Gorge. Bit of a scramble getting down with loose footing, but we made our way through the brush and hit Odessa Lake before the rain came down. Made our way back to Bear Lake Trail Head. Great outing!

The Tops TraverseFlattop, Ptarmigan, Notchtop, Knobtop, Gabletop all on a cloudy morning with my friend Jesse Sumrak.. Left Bear Lake trailhead at 5:00 a.m. The sunrise was stunning. There was no wind but lots of overcast. We descended down Tourmaline Gorge. We used the big chute that is just west of Gabletop. Near Tourmaline Lake we climbed the little ridge just south of the lake and traversed over to the other small drainage in the gorge. Eventually we found some cairns but they were not that helpful. Popped out on the west side of Odessa Lake and made our way back to the trail and to Bear Lake. The rain started coming down while we were at Odessa around 9: 30/10:00. It rained the whole way back to Bear Lake. We were soaked.

Via FlattopClimbed this along with Flattop and Hallett. Trail was a little icy below tree line and a little bit of snow above tree line.

This is a named peak? This is an example of naming anything that looks like a pile of rocks...cuz that's what it is...a small pile of rocks.

Solo jauntGuided Chicago buddy of mine up Flattop. He was utterly wasted, so I had to settle on a quick jog over to this point for some privacy and to burn off some steam. Always love this area. Great photos of the Notchtop and Helene from the back side.

Add-On with PrivacyAdded this to Flattop and Hallet on a sunny, rain-free day. Lots of wind, but Ptarmigan provided a good sanctuary, wonderful views of the lakes below, and lots of alpine privacy.

Flattop - Ptarmigan Pt - Hallett - OtisFrom Bear Lake, hiked up Flattop Mtn, Ptarmigan Pt, Hallett Pk, and Otis Pk, descending Andrews Glacier. The wind was freezing and relentless for the 3+ hours that I was on the Continental Divide. That sort of thing doesn't bother me, though. Bring it on!

Nice Easy PeakHiked from TH to summit via the standard trail over Flat Top's summit (1:30 hrs). Couldn't tell where Flat Top's summit actually was, so I cut off from the trail junction to climb Hallet (2-2:30), and then back across the plateau to climb Ptarmigan Pt via up and down the fun cl. 3 bump on its W slopes (3:00) before descending, with a RT time of 4:20 hrs. Nice trail!

Just me and three Bighorn SheepA quick hike from Ptarmigan Pass to the top, where three bighorn sheep peered over at me before running away. Great views of Hallet and Otis from the top.

From FlattopDecided to grab Ptarmigan after "flattening" out of Flattop. I had fun marveling at the drop offs and the snow. Oh yeah, granite will indeed bite you!

Independence TripI caught Ptarmigan after ascending Tyndall Glacier to Flattop. It was a beautiful day with an elk herd on top of the Divide. Looks like some alpine bouldering fun could be had on the way up to Ptarmigan.

From FlattopSkirted over this to get a better view of Cracktop from the flats. God-awfully hot day despite all the snow. One of the few times I wished there was wind!
