Cross counrty from Mt Florence  Sucess!

!st day of the Sierra Challenge. After summitting Mt Florence at 1PM I set out for 'Parsons Pass' and Parsons Peak. I got caught in a thunder/hail/sleet storm below Parsons Pass and finally got to the Ireland Lake trail around sunset. Exhausted from the long cross-country route and lack of sleep (only 2 hrs) I made my way back 11 miles in the dark on the water filled trail. Fog and moonlight lent an eerie atmosphere to Lyell Fork Canyon. Hopefully subsequent Challege days would not be so exhausting. 30+ miles, 10000+ feet, 3 peaks dayhike.

Route Climbed: NE Slope from A. Earhart saddle and Ireland Lake Date Climbed: Aug. 1, 1979  Sucess!

Climbed, along with Bart O'Brien, Steve Thomas, and Pat O'Leary, on the way to doing Amelia Earhart Peak from our camp at the stream outlet at Ireland Lake. Beautiful area! Returned to the meadows by cutting over the ridge North of the lake, dropping down past Evelyn Lake and followed the use trail down the creek that feeds into Rafferty creek.

I set out to climb Mt. Florence in a three day effort and made a complete mess of it. Parsons was the consolation prize, made better when year's later I found out it was a county highpoint (or near one). I still have to go back and do it as a dayhike to "set things right." :-) Trip Report
