Pro Modular Mitts

For arctic conditions, these gloves are a must. Combined with midweight fleece liner gloves, it creates a very warm and weatherproof combination. The thumb is a little tight, so make sure that you try the gloves on with a pair of liner gloves (powerstretch fleece gloves work very well) before buying. You can still grip your trekking poles and mountaineering axe fairly well for big, burly gloves, but I'm not sure if I would go as far as to try ice climbing up steep ice in 'em. If your trips demand warm gloves for exceptionally cold places, check these out.

I used these mitts for several seasons. They are very warm but there are some real drawbacks. The thumb is quite tight (if you buy the right length mitts for your fingers) which makes getting them on and off a bit of a challenge. This is especially true when your hands are damp. Probably the most negative thing about these mitts is that they are incredibly non-flexible. The rubber-like palms while waterproof are hard to flex. This makes fine movements very difficult, especially when coupled with the fact that the inner gloves are very thick. This stiffness did not go away even after 2 seasons of heavy use. I found I was constantly taking the mitts off to work zippers, buckles etc. It was even hard to grip a ski pole and I found myself dropping a pole periodically. I think these mitts have the advantage of being very warm, but you sacrifice workability with them and there are better choices out there.

The long sleeve on the mits are great and the velcro closures on the forearm and around the wrist minimize the chance of water/snow worming in to dampen fingers.



Do not have a problem with the flexibility or fit of these mits. Wear polypro liner gloves underneath the double liner mit and use these if I need to do something delicate with straps etc. My hands are about an M size but am using the XL mit without problems.
