Product Description

(From the Publisher)

Since publication of the first edition in 1961, Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills has endured as the classic mountaineering text. Novice climbers use it as a primer; veterans use it to review their skills. Translated into five languages, it has instructed and inspired more than half a million climbers from all over the world. The fully updated seventh edition maintains the same high standard for complete, authoritative instruction in an easy-to-use format.

From choosing equipment to how to tie a particular knot, from basic rappelling technique to planning an expedition, it's all here in this essential mountaineering reference. Continued evolution of the sport ensures that climbers who own previous editions will need to "upgrade" to the new seventh edition. The chapter on aid climbing, for example, has been substantially rewritten to include new aid techniques and equipment. A new chapter has been added to meet the rising popularity of waterfall ice and mixed climbing.

The more than thirty contributors to Freedom 7 (7th Edition) are all active climbers who regularly use and teach the skills about which they write. This book is the resource trusted by climbers the world over.

The Mountaineers Club, based in Seattle, Washington, was founded in 1906. It is now the third largest outdoor recreation club of its kind in the United States, with nearly 15,000 members. The Mountaineers sponsors both classes and year-round outdoor activities, which include hiking, climbing, ski touring, snowshoeing, kayaking, canoeing, and more.

The matter covered in the book (v.7) is not only very complete, but executed in an interesting manner as well. Great diagrams and pictures. A must for anyone from novice to expert.

The classic.
Everyone who thinks about getting into any sort of climbing should pick up this book. It is the one book that you can mention to any climber around the world and they'll instantly know what you're talking about.

Amazing longevity
This book was around when I started climbing and each new edition picks up all the changes and upgrades that occur in this sport we call "Mountaineering" It is simply the best information source on climbing ever compiled. I need to get my copy out and refresh myself once again. Thanks Mountaineers, you've done us all a service.

A Must Read
I read it cover to cover and still go back to it. If you want to know how to do something, this is the book.

Again; A must read
This book is the starting point and a great reference book that gets repeated use. It offers a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of mountaineering; read all of it, then go back and review it.

As side note: I found it very helpful to suplement this book with many skill specific books; especially safety related books.

A great foundation!
This was the first mountaineering book that I bought and the one I learned out of (and still am).
I would agree with skotty that it is a good starting point but it is a good idea to supplement it with other books specific to different areas of climbing. The mountaineers also publish books that would do this really well. For example, Medicine: For Mountaineering and Other Wilderness Activities, is a great book to supplement the first aid section.

Great resource
It is not really indepth on any single topic but covers so many different situations and techniques. It is invaluable as a reference and as a foundation of knowledge. Hands down the most complete book of its type. Anyone wishing to progress in mountaineering will need other books as well but this is the place to start.

The best
This is the most comprehensive book on mountaineering that I have ever seen. Many climbing courses use this as their textbook, with good reason.

Uncontroversial
This is a collection of tried-and-true techniques handed down by the generations. An indispensable reference guide but by no means the last word on montaineering.

Bible of the Mountains
I thought I knew a lot about this subject until I got this book for Christmas a few years ago. It is amazing! i think the book that comes closest to it with regards to useful and crucial information would be the BSA's Fieldbook. If you want to go mountaineering you MUST have this book.
