There is a road called 'Skline Drive' that goes 6 miles E to W right to the base of Warner Peak, thus eliminating the 3.5 mile dirt road on foot slog from the campground. It is a high clearance vehicle road and is open Aug 1 - Dec 1. It took me 45 minutes to drive the 6 miles in a Toyota Land Cruiser.
I remember the road but it was gated when I was there. I saw the sign 'aug 1 - dec 1' and even took a picture of it. Congrat's on doing this with your kids. Thanks for the input, I will transfer your info to the front page.
From the parking at the wooden gate it is only 1,100' of gain to the peak. You're parked at 6,900'. Confirmed that they do have gas in Plush as mentioned above. If coming from the North on 395 it is possible to turn off ~12 miles prior to Plush at the signed Hart Mountain turnoff on the left. It comes out right at the end of the paved road if coming from Plush. Also, from Plush you need to head 0.8 miles north and turn right on the Hart Mountain road and then proceed as described in Dean's instructions. Gate was open July 20, 2013. I saw someone drive to the summit from a road to the south of the peak! Likely not legal??
