Approach

We approached from the South Fork of Cascade Canyon. Our camp was near the junction of the Teton Crest trail and the old Skyline trail. Follow the Skyline trail south to the Avalance Canyon divide where the trail peters out. Look to your left (unless you have been hiking backwards...in that case look right) and you will see the West ridge route.

Route Description

The route goes straight up the ridge to a 40' wall. We climbed the wall (easy class 4) and angled to the right to enter a gully on the north side of the mountain. We followed this gully up and left (south) to another gully that led us up and east to the summit. Great views of Middle Teton from the summit. We investigated going left at the top of the first wall but thought it was a little exposed since we had no rope. If you're more confident than we were you might want to try this option.

Essential Gear

This route was a half day side trip on a extended backpacking trip. It is not technical and no special gear is needed. However,it can get nasty anytime in the Tetons, make sure you bring rain gear and an insulating layer on this climb.

Miscellaneous Info

This is an easy climb and works fits in well on a backpacking trip, It gets you on a summit in the middle of this spectacular range, with great views of the Middle and Grand Tetons.

The park wants anyone climbing to register.. which we did. MAKE SURE THE RANGERS UNDRSTAND THAT YOU ARE CLIMBING DURING A BACKPACKING TRIP IF THIS IS WHAT YOUR INTENTIONS ARE. WE WERE LISTED AS OVERDUE AFTER OUR CLIMB (WE BACKPACKED FOR ANOTHER 4 DAYS AFTER THE CLIMB)

Parents

Parents refers to a larger category under which an object falls. For example, theAconcagua mountain page has the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits' asparents and is a parent itself to many routes, photos, and Trip Reports.
