Last of 9  Sucess!

Climbed the ridge from Kachina all the way to Wheeler. We hit Kachina Peak...An unnamed peak, Lake Fork Peak, "Bighorn Peak",Pt 12,728, Simpson, Old Mike, Wheeler, and then Walter. Started at 7:20am and then finished at 5:30. We started at the Williams Lake Trailhead. Amazing day! The weather somehow cooperated with us the whole time. Very fun traverse. Saw lots of Elk, Bighorn Sheep and Mountain Goats. SO MUCH FUN!!

By proxy...  Sucess!

Bagged this on the way to the summit of Wheeler. Seems pretty easy since the trail runs right over the summit.

On the way to Wheeler  Sucess!

Made this attempt seriously out of shape and paid for it. Summiting this mountain was anti-climatic since out goal was Mt. Wheeler for this trip. Nice to have it anyway. Great time with our crew.

Weather Issues At The Summit  Sucess!

Starting in the early morning, there were beautiful weather conditions... *until* I climbed halfway up the saddle-slope between Wheeler Peak & Mount Walter. Then, suddenly, a solid cloud blanket covered over both peaks. The wind picked up, and it quickly felt like the temperature dropped to below freezing. When I reached Wheeler Peak's summit, the cloud/fog was so thick that I couldn't see 2-3 feet in front of me, so I jogged over to Mount Walter's summit to hopefully find more suitable conditions... only to find much of the same thick cloud cover there. It was too bad, as I bet that the views from the summits would have been spectacular. Thank goodness for my GPS & general pathfinding skills. The Williams Lake Trail is very nice!!!

By Default  Sucess!

I don't really think this counts as a separate peak, but who am I to judge. I took the 10 extra steps to tag it on my way to Wheeler so I guess it has some meaning

Via Williams Lake after doing Wheeler Peak  Sucess!

This was a very long drive for us to get to hike to New Mexico's highest point and second highest, but it turned out to be well worth it. Fun steep route, great exercise and great vistas, not to mention all the wildlife we saw and many interesting wildflowers back down in the forest.
We made it down just before a massive thunderstorm developed.
My dog was a trooper. Our slideshow from this adventure is here, enjoy:
