First tried this one in November of 1999. I turned around when I got to treeline. The snow and wind were terrible. Tried it again in August of 2000 with success. Only 4 people up there. I forgot my camera somewhere near the top, that sucked. I ran down from the saddle back to the TH. Did pretty good!
I had to pull over as soon as I turned onto US24 though, I wasn't feeling good and threw up. I was fine after that!
Route Climbed: SE route Date Climbed: September 2000
Felt pretty easy. Nice 600 foot summit cone. Could see Pikes Peak and all the way south through the Crestones, sand dunes, and to Blanca group. Good yellow fall colors.
Route Climbed: Blank Gulch Date Climbed: July 14, 2003
Only real comment is that this route is pretty long. If you go over to Tabaguache, you have re-climb Shavano on your descent. We got part of the way to Tabaguache, and got chased off by an early(10:30am) thunderstorm. You are a long way from treeline if that happens.
Route Climbed: Angel o' Shavano Date Climbed: June 2005
Fun easy snow route. Didn't even need the crampons or axe. Good ski descent on Angel snowfield, the rest of the party glissaded the Angel and had a blast. Highly recommended it if the conditions are right.
Route Climbed: angel standard Date Climbed: June 2005
I ascended this mountain after a few weeks constant backpacking and climbing and was able to jog and speed hike past the lame, winded tourists. The traverse over to Tabeguache is really definitive of the Sawatch. The more Southerly ridge makes for a more pleasantly solitary descent, or ascent I suppose, and it even has a pleasant name 'Esprit Peak' according to G. Roach.
Route Climbed: Blank Gulch Date Climbed: September, 2005
Overcast, slightly windy at saddle and peak. Bighorn sheep female came close to me on trail down, but bounded after my dog came closer. Saw big rafter of wild turkeys at TH, during hunting season, no hunters around!
Route Climbed: Blank Gulch Date Climbed: 03-SEP-2005
Excellent weather - hit the summit at about 1130 after a 5 hours on the trail with my wife and 2 dogs. Decided against doing Tabeguache since we were encroaching on the afternoon. Got some light rain on the way back down after we hit the trees. Overall a great day on the mountain. Will have to come back to bag Tabeguache another day.
Route Climbed: Blank Gulch Date Climbed: August 25, 2005
Summited Shavano with Mountain Girl and we proceeded over to Tabeguache. Got as far as the saddle and turned back due to dicey weather moving over. Came back up too low and had to scramble back up to the ridge top. All in all, a good hike. 14er number 23 for me.
Route Climbed: Blank Gulch Date Climbed: August 27, 2005
Summited Shavano (2x) & Tab. It was an interesting day that turned out well, but could have been bad. Had to wait on my company so got an hour late start (7am), and then he was struggling up the mountain so I had to go at it on my own. T-storms blew in early and grapple fell hard. Most hikers were running down to tree-line (which is quite a long ways away!) I was fortunate to get off before the lightening, but MANY were not. ...and SOME were still going up... yeah, dum. They all had stories to tell in the "parking lot," poles buzzing, hair standing straight up, etc... and they seemed proud?!

Route Climbed: Angel of Shavano to Blank Gulch Date Climbed: 8-19-05
We started the morning looking for a trailhead that no longer exists, but found out that had been closed, so we decided to use Angel of Shavano trailhead. We looked for the steep trail rising out of Angel of Shavano trailhead but couldn't find it, so we just hiked up to Blank Gulch and statrted from there. Very beautiful hike with some amazing views, it was fairly long, but easy.
Route Climbed: Angel of Shavano Date Climbed: May 2002
This was a very dry year so the angel of shavano was more like the angel of scree. We ascended along a trail to the north of the angel of shavano. Ended up badly spraining an ankle at about 14,000' on the way down in a thunderstorm. Took about 8 hours to limp back to the car, but made the summit!
Route Climbed: Angel Snowfield Date Climbed: May 10, 2005
3/4/14- long winter climb of shavano, with esprit point and tabeguache, via its southeast ridge. the snowpack was much firmer than i expected leading to an "easier" 6625' vertical gain day. passed out afterwards! #58/100 winter
4/22/06- another climb of the angel, w/dave hale. always enjoyable!
5/10/05- excellent, snow climb! i would definitely recommend this for someone who has never completed a snow climb. one of the best glissades in Colorado!

Shavano & TabeguacheFrom Tabeguache, Descended McCoy Gulch just to see what all the fuss was about. It's interesting, but I've been down worse.
