On the way down
Climbed Muir while on the way down the Whitney Trail. Might have been 3rd class, but the exposure made it a bit sketchy without a rope on the west side.
After getting shafted on Polemonium the day before, we scored Whitney permits just as someone else forfeited them. Got 1 hour of sleep, left the car at 12:40am, summit at 7am, car at 11:20am. Been up Whitney a few times already so didn't bother. Fun and too short 3rd class.

Whitney Crest Photo Op
Rewarding views with a quiet summit experience away from the busy trail. Would have stayed a while longer, but with Whitney calling and the clouds building, we were off the peak and on to greater heights. Completed the journey with a quick departure from Consultation Lake camp in a lovely afternoon hail storm. The trail was draining a couple inches of icy water for many miles. Left camp at 5PM to reach car at full darkness. Side note: Love those trail runner shoes and smart socks. Miles packing out with feet in water and no discomfort.
a side trip with Vendulka after getting up Whitney via MR.

With a little help from my friends
Had tried several times before alone. But running into some experienced climbers taught me the value of experience. Turned out to be a pretty easy scramble.

From the Whitney trail
Solo Russell / Whitney / Muir in a day hike for the second time. Once on the trail, it's only a short scramble, definitely worth the extra 1/2 hr.
Towards the bottom of the switchbacks I tripped and cracked a rib, which didn't feel that great. My total time was still better than before - 14 hrs or so.

bagged it from the WT on the way down. Great view of the dreaded switchbacks. I agree not quite the necessary 300', but worth the excursion.

Whitney-Keeler-Muir on the Main Trail
Almost feels like cheating doing it from the main trail, but the good class 3 (3+?) scramble takes away the guilt. Second 14-er of the day (3rd if you count Keeler Needle). Dimitri and I skipped Crooks because its too much like Keeler and I needed something else to look forward to on my next trip. Awesome views of "The 99" and Trail Camp.
