Route Climbed: Mt. Massive trial Date Climbed: November 2, 2001
Had an itch for one more 14er since my excursion to Long's Peak in September was cancelled to snow. Went on a Friday with a friend. Slept in our cars and it was freezing when we got up. We had sunshine and blue sky all day. Real beautiful trail but a long one. Snow on the ground and sometimes knee deep but never enough to pull out the snowhoes. Someone had gone up the day before and left some nice steps in the snow at the top. I would like to thank him/her. Only saw 2 other hikers as we were coming down
Route Climbed: Northeast slopes Date Climbed: Aug 16 2001
First summit of Nolan's 14, less than 3 hours from Fish Hatchery but already most of the other runners are ahead of me. Down the west scree slopes an on to Elbert.
Hiked up Massive the day after Elbert. After all the crowds on Elbert, it was weird to have the whole mountain to myself. Never saw anyone the whole day. A massive T-storm kept me from lingering on the summit. I raced it back down, and it struck while I was at about 12,500 feet, so I guess I beat it. This mountain is called Massive for a reason, if I'm ever in CO in the winter, I know what ski-traverse I plan on trying.
Climbed this one w/my two buddies who bickered all day about who was the best at EVERYTHING.... Best part was they got into a shouting match at the bottom, made for a fun ride home! HA! Talk about your long days..
Route Climbed: Halfmoon Trailhead Date Climbed: November 11, 2001
Left Aurora at around 5:30am and began hiking at 7:45am. Should've gotten an earlier start for this time of the year. A little more than half way up I ran into some untracked snow that was pretty deep in places and this slowed me down quite a bit. Took me about 6 hours to make it to the summit and another 4 to get back to the car. Definately going to buy some gaiters for my next snowy hike. This was the most difficult 14er I've climbed so far mostly due to the amount of snow I encountered. Not a very technical climb just long. This was the first 14er for my dog Chelsea. She and I were the only ones on the summit except one other guy this particular day.
Route Climbed: Mt. Massive Trail Date Climbed: August 18, 2001
Delayed because of the Leadville Trail 100 (running), we didn't hit the trailhead until 10 a.m. We were concerned about the late start, but there wasn't a cloud in the sky. We summited at 3 p.m. very much exhuasted. The view made me forget about how tired I was..absolutely amazing!!! If you hike this mountain, don't get discouraged at treeline when you see how far you have to go...it goes quickly!
The clouds started to form around 4 p.m. out of nowhere and, luckily, we were only sprinkled on the last hour of the hike back to the trailhead. You don't realize what a long hike it is until the way down! This hike is highly recommended!
Route Climbed: East side Date Climbed: January 1981
This was the second time I had been on a mountain on cross country skis. First time was 2 nights before. Coming down was hell since I had no idea how to turn: Go fast, fall, repeat. It was a REALLY long day.
Route Climbed: Mt. Massive Trail Date Climbed: 8-31-01
A day after climbing Bierstadt, this flatlander Hoosier and Colorado College student son were thrilled by the solitude of Massive. We took two leisurely days, camping just below treeline. An early start the next day yielded one of the most beautiful sunrises you'll ever see, but it was snowing pretty good by the time we reached the top, resulting in summit photos awash in white. This was 14er No. 3. If my son goes on the 50-year plan to get through college, I might get 'em all.

Route Climbed: Mt Massive Trail Date Climbed: 9/1/01Another solo hike - mixed weather and a nasty hailstorm to top it off. I was alone at the top - a brief pause in the crowd of hikers that day.

Route Climbed: Southwest SlopeThis is the shortest route on Massive but it is steep and can involve some steep snow climbing in spring.
