Route Climbed: Old Army Pass Date Climbed: August 20th, 2003
Left from 5th lake of the Cottonwood Lakes, had great weather, and a great climb. A good peak for anyone looking to get some elevation without too much exposure.
Route Climbed: Old Army Pass Date Climbed: sept 11, 2004
Camped at Muir Lake. 6 1/2 hours round trip via Old Army Pass. Perfect day to be at 14,000 feet. Pretty easy climb except for the last 500 feet. Trail disappears and it's scramble in loose sand and scree to the top.
Route Climbed: Army Pass Date Climbed: Aug-20-2004
It rained and thundered in the afternoon. I was able to make it to the top in the am... beat the bad weather... stay high on one of the trails the last 1000 feet... take the right side of the slope to the summit. Class 3 but you avoid the sandy slopes... windy and cold on the summit...
Route Climbed: via Old Army Pass Date Climbed: August 8, 2004
The south and west side of Langley isn't a mountain, it is a giant sand dune! :-p An enjoyable day none the less. Helped out another climber (read Bob Burd's account in his 2004 Sierra Challenge thread). I moved toward the east and climbed the class 3 rock to avoid the sand. Great Views all around and I forgot my camera :-(
Route Climbed: Old Army Pass via Horseshoe Meadow Date Climbed: July 22, 2004
A long day but worth it in the end for the great views not only from the top, but along the way. A much more visually interesting hike than expected...plus some class 3-4 scrambling near the top!
Route Climbed: Old Army Pass to South Face and South-East Ridge Date Climbed: October 12, 2003, September 1, 2002, August 16, 2000
Via Old Army Pass each time, it's in great condition even though it's not maintained. In October 2003, up from Cottonwood Lake #5 with Arnie Coleman and Chip Boyd via the South Face Class 3 scramble (pick a line, there are many). In September 2002, solo from the trailhead via the South Face, CTC 11 hours. In August 2000, with Mike Garcia via the South-East ridge, Class 2-3 route to the summit (really fun if you can deal with all the sand in getting to the ridge).
Route Climbed: Chute north of Cottonwood Lake#6 Date Climbed: July 17, 2004
Bag it, tag it, sell it to the butcher in the store.
This chute sucked. I would not take it unless you are the patron saint of ascending loose scree. I descended via Old Army Pass and found that much more pleasant.
Route Climbed: Old Army Pass Date Climbed: July 10, 2004
Left the trail head at 6:30am, reached the summit at 12noon, and was back to the car by 5pm. This was an easy hike up to the top of Old Army Pass, but the last two miles to the summit were hard (physically not technically).
Route Climbed: Old Army Pass Date Climbed: July 3 2004
Started from camp at cottenwood lake 5, 8:00 am. first 14r for 50 yr old man who just started climbing, great day. Little snow left on trail up army pass, but no need for ax or crampons. Hard going up from pass for Indiana man, because of altitude, but at the top well worth it. Great views as far as you can see. Make sure you look over summit to tuttle creek. Streight Down.
Route Climbed: Old Army Pass Date Climbed: May 22, 2004
My second time up. The fun part was the climb up the snow chute to Old Army Pass. It looked intimidating from below but wasn't that bad. Snow fields on the way up to Langley were annoying though.
Route Climbed: Approach - New Army Pass / Return - Old Army Pass Date Climbed: June 26, 2004
With Jim Williams and Jamie Mason. Time: 5 hrs., 20 min.+/- from South Fork Lakes. We enjoyed spectacular views of the summits of Mts. Whitney, Russell and Williamson to the north as well as the afternoon storm in the Kern River basin... JM
Route Climbed: Old Army Pass Date Climbed: 26 June 2004
Hiked into Cottonwood Lake 4 on Friday morning, then up Army Pass Saturday morning to summit. My son made the summit almost an hour ahead of me to bag his first 14er. Good weather except for some distant smoke from a fire and a little rain off to the NW. The last 800 feet to the summit was harder than expected, it's class 3 or 4 unless you find the right route up through the boulders. Photos online
Route Climbed: New Army Pass-up & Old Army Pass-down Date Climbed: June 24th, 2004
Everyone seems to like the crowds at the Cottonwood Lakes area? We camped along New Army Trail, near Long Lake & had the place to ourselves. Great location & worth the extra mile of hiking. The whole area was neat, with all the large meadows & or valleys high up along the way. The trail was easy going, which left plenty of energy for summit day, in-fact, I thought this to be my easiest 14'er so far!
Route Climbed: Old Army Pass Date Climbed: May 16th, 2004
Climbed with hyperbolictans and rgreene. Left base camp at 5:30 am from Lake #3 and took the direct variant up the couloir. Reached the top around 7:30 am. Easy trek over to the base of Langley but had difficulties route finding in the mixed snow and scree. Summited around 1 pm - the last mile took ~4 hours! Back down after a nice glissade at 5 p.m.
Route Climbed: Old army pass direct chute Date Climbed: 16th May
Summitted with rgreene and blmclain. started at ~5:45am at the tip of cottonwood lake 3, below old army pass. up at the pass via the direct chute by 7:45am. My first crampon and ice-axe experience. Some random scrambling in snow and scree brings us to the summit at 1pm.
Route Climbed: Old Army (Direct Colouir) Date Climbed: 16 May 2004
Summitted with blmcclain and hyperbolictans - the direct climb up the colouir for Old Army was fun (and the glissade down). The part above Old Army was much longer and harder than expected.
Route Climbed: South Slopes Date Climbed: August 2002
Did this as a side trip from Soldier Lakes and up the tiresome south slope. The cl.3 rocks short of the summit helped mix things up, lots of smoke in the area so the view wasn't the best.
