Re: MagnificentThis is in Chamonix, France at the Mer de Glace. A train takes you to Montenvers where you can access the glacier. Thanks for all the comments!!

Reminded of a Bierstadt paintingThe mist and fog is reminiscent of some of the of the Hudson River School painters that migrated to California in the 19th century. Wonderful lighting and shadows; I'l bet you don't get these conditions very often.

Re: Reminded of a Bierstadt paintingWell, the funny thing was that I didn't have any of those conditions. All I had was a partly cloudy day, a setting sun and a 3 MP camera! I am so glad the photo turned out so wonderful.

GreatBefore you take photo, prepare the lighting all the angles?
Great shot.

Re: GreatI didn't prepare any of the lighting, just the angles. The photo just came naturally to me.

Really nice shotIs the lighter area of rock running down center right of the mountain where the Bonatti Pillar "used" to be?

Re: Really nice shotAfter doing some research, I am sad to say that it is. Unfortunately, this isn't even the worst tragedy to happen in the Alps. You really need to read about the Eiger, if you haven't already.

Great, but a sad shotThis magnificent mountain has been badly wounded. However, I'm afraid it isn't the end of the story.

Re: Great, but a sad shotWow, this really is a sad shot. I had no idea this mountain was so scarred. I can't imagine what this mountain will look like in 20 years.

Like a dreamWow! This picture takes my breath away. It looks like a painting or a peak in some fantasy movie like Lords of the Ring.
Thanks for posting.

Re: Like a dreamI thought that same thing when viewing the photo, but when you experience Le Dru and the area, it all makes perfect sense.
