First time in Southern Sierra
Quick dayhike- first time seeing the Southern Sierra. On the drive back after a great Thanksgiving weekend in Saline Valley. Tagged the highpoint further east too.

Via trail
Wanted a short hike to break up the drive between Lone Pine and San Jose, and this looked like a good candidate. Followed the trail to the top. Scrambled up the wrong rock pile first, but that's okay - it was a fun summit area to play around in. Lots of wildflowers lining the trail right now. Good fun peak that at least gets in a bit of a workout due to the climb.

Very fun #2
Our first destination was Lamont Peak (7429’). Lamont Peak is located in the Chimney Peak Recreation Area in the Owens Valley near Walker Pass. There is a nice class 1 trail that leads up to the peak, and the view is 360 degrees. From the peak we could see Sawtooth Peak, Spanish Needle, White Dome, Rockhouse, Churchdome, Pinyon Peak, and more. The total distance was about 4 miles, and the elevation gain was 2250’.
...with my love, Jeff :)
and yes, twas a slightly painful hike. I usually go faster than other people, and am most familiar with the San Gabriels. Lamont took my breath away and made me realize how much I have to go (in terms of my bodily strength), and makes me want to further explore the (amazing! wonderful!) Sierras. gorgeous

Short, steep, and enjoyable hike, followed by Sawtooth in the afternoon. Also climbed nearby Lamont Point a couple of days later--pretty cool summit block.
I might come back to do a loop around Lamont-East Lamont-Spanish-Lamont Pt-Sawtooth sometime. This is a great area.

nice morning
Probably would find a way to scramble over to Lamont Point if I did it now, just to make the day more interesting :-) Sweet views of Spanish Needle, Owens, Olancha, and even up to Langley.

Magical Day
Started out in the clouds. A light rain soon turned to snow, which dusted the pinons and sagebrush. Visibility was never more than 100 yards. I climbed the wrong summit first, then found the correct one. A very peaceful outing. I probably liked this better than if the weather had been clear.

Via trailA loop of Lamont-Spanish Needle-Sawtooth with Jeff D. I didn't make it to Sawtooth b/c of a sprained ankle. This peak was very short, but enjoyable.

From roadShort, steep hike, although really short. Took time in the afternoon to do this one since the fish weren't biting at the 2005 Isabella Trout Derby.
