Jolly
Gate was open. Easy hike from upper road. Last 500' still has a fair amount of snow.

#9
Bagged this summit as summit number 9/10 in a contest put on by Sahaptin Outfitters out of Cle Elum. I drove up unmarked FS 4315 all the way to the new end of the road where the Jolly Mountain trail crosses the road. The ascent up to the summit went by super fast and before I knew it, I was at the old lookout site. Just as I arrived, it started snowing, and some wicked weather blew in real fast. I went on to bag Skookum after Jolly.

Almost run over by motorcyclists
When I got to the summit, they had emptied their gas tanks, thrown the fuel on some old wood, and were having a weenie roast.

Beautiful Day Alone!
Had the place all to myself, the entire day. Literally saw no one from start to finish.
I went up Jolly Mountain Trail, starting at Cayuse Horse Camp. Straightforward walk-up! Scenery is incredible once you hit Sasse Ridge - all the way to the summit.

Holy Train Wreck!
This was a piece of work for me. Much harder than most of the cascade volcanoes. But I did climb a tough mountain the day before, and there was a lot of snow, and when I attempted this peak the first time it was not very hard going.

Had to turn around...
We were exactly one mile from the summit when we decided it was best to turn around. We only had 2-3 hours' daylight left, a winter storm system was moving in, and, most importantly, a teammate got VERY sick (i.e. dizzy, blurred vision, occasionally passing out). To be that close to the summit is one thing, but a teammate's health is quite another. We escorted him down the mountain, and he's OK again. We'll go back another time, and reach the summit.
UPDATE: Made a successful 2nd attempt (EastKing's 3rd attempt) on Sunday, June 28, 2009. Awesome 360-degree panoramic views, well worth the ~12-13 miles roundtrip effort. Highly recommended summit climb, but in my opinion it would be best in Summer/Fall (rather than Winter/Spring). We made a side-trip to nearby Sasse Mountain afterwards, making for a 16-mile trek for the day.
