"There's a Red House over yonder ..."
Zoom view, (looking east from the Templeton Trail), at
Twin Buttes, Church Spires and the golden hues of Munds Mountain.
The deep red color of the sandstone is due to hemetite (iron-oxide) which
stains the normally white quartz sandstone.
The Coconino sandstone making up
Munds Mountain was formed 265 million years ago after the recession of the Pedregosa Sea.
Excuse me. I need to recharge my cosmic batteries by taking another look
at the sandstone.
