5 Mountain Loop
Grueling, with only limited views here and there along the Dix Range loop.

Second of five
Took me 92 minutes to get from the top of Dix to here. I definitely felt off kilter though which made me wonder if I still hadn't gotten over a case of roast beef food poisoning two days prior. From here south to South Dix.

Dix Range Traverse
About 20 miles of horrible snow conditions, brutal mountain ascents and descents, and unmarked, untamed wilderness. You know you're on an epic when you leave camp at 7:30 am and don't return until 11:00 pm. With that said, adding five more 46ers, getting awesome weather, and experiencing killer views made it all worth it!
Set out to do 5 peaks, but hit my limit at #4, Hough Peak. Awesome hike up Macolm Mt, over to South Dix to East Dix (Grace Peak), then back to Hough Peak. Went back down Lillian Brook trail and made the loop hike in 9 1/2 hours. Great day, weather couldn't have been better, the kind of hiking day I dream about. Looking forward to going back up Hough and along the ridge to Dix Mt, it looks like a really interesting trail.

Hough
I decided to hike the four smaller peaks due to the distance of the trailhead from my home. I took the Lillian Brook trail to the summit. I loved the trail! There were so few rocks and the brook was pleasant. The views from this peak of the Beck-horn were amazing! I descended to the col and off to South Dix.
I went into this hike with my map but no descriptions. I was certainly hampered by the non-existent trail markers throughout what became a trying day. I would love to go back and put up durable trail signs and directions. Heck I wouldn't mind bringing a chainsaw and fixing some trail issues.
Summited Hough Peak 4400' during a 2 night backpacking trip in the Dix Range. After summiting Macomb and East & South Dix, we followed the trail from South Dix over a false peak before the final push to the summit of Hough, Dix Mountains neighbor. The herd path beat us up pretty bad, with trees and pine needles wacking us in the face constantly. We also postholed constantly in the 2 feet of snow. The summit was mostly covered in foliage. Hough was merely an obstacle on our way to Dix Mountain.

5 in one weekend, age 14
In June '78 I knocked-off 5 peaks with my Scout Troop and a great leader that hooked me on wilderness adventures (Dix, East Dix, South Dix, Hough and McComb)

Dix to Hough
Nicely broken trail, used snow shoes the whole way. We saw a guy who slipped off Dix summit, 10 feet, caught by a little spruce tree. :-/ Lucky! Came down the Lillian Brook trail. Sore knees afterwards!!! The herd path was easy to find, slightly packed down. No problems. Beautiful winter day for hiking!!!
Helped with trail maintenance on the beautiful Lillian Brook Herdpath, then enjoyed excellent views from the summit.

Fourth Summit of the Day
At this point RD Jim and I had yet to see another hiker the entire day. Had the whole range to ourselves until we got up to the Beckhorn. Herd paths in great shape for unofficial trails. 32/46. Fine day!

Dix Range Traverse
Did this as part of a one-day Dix Range Traverse. Came up the Macomb Slide and then through the herd paths to South Dix, East Dix, then back to Hough. Beautiful sunny day with a few clouds here and there. The views are great from Hough, but somewhat overshadowed by its neighbor Dix.
#45 for me. Meet someone who was carrying an ice axe in July on the summit. What a wacky dude ....

Lillian Brook Approach
Warm, snowy day. Did Hough along with East and South Dix. Lots of snow on the approach. Had the best views of the day on Hough, which basically included one of the Dix slides breaking out from the clouds and the East/South Dix Ridgeline briefly coming into view. Needless to say, we were in the clouds all day.
