General information
Tne Harz is the highest mountain range in northern Germany. Its highest peak is the Brocken (1,141 m), which is situated in the High Harz (Hochharz), not far from towns Wernigerode and Bad Harzburg. I won't wright here about many legends related to this place - you can easily find this information in Internet.
In my opinion, the best time to visit Harz is the beginning of winter, because the coniferous forest of Harz is covered with snow by this time, but numerous lakes are not frozen yet. This combination produces an unforgettable impression.
There are a lot of ways to reach Brocken. The easiest one - to use the Brocken Railway, which starts in Wernigerode or Drei Annen Hohne station and brings you to the summit of the Brocken. But I would not recommend this way, because the summit itself is not very picturesque. You'll see the beauty of this place, which consists in wind-shaped spruce and fir trees, only by ascent.
I chose the so-called "Teufelssteig", which leads from the town Bad Harzburg by magnificent Eckerstausee to the summit.
