Overview

Gorham Mountain Trail is one of the most popular hiking trails in Acadia National Park. With a 525 foot summit, Gorham Mountain is not one of the higher mountains on Mount Desert Island, but its close coastal location provides views that are both intimate and spectacular.

Your ascent begins from the Gorham Mountain Trail parking area located on the Park Loop Road, a short distance on the right side a short distance past Thunder Hole. Rated as moderate, the hiking trail begins as an easy steady climb through a spruce forest, gradually becoming more rugged as it opens to a granite ascent.

Getting There

A Gorham Mountain Trail parking area can be found along Park Loop Road, after Sand Beach and Thunder Hole. Often times, parking is permitted in the right lane of the Park Loop Road.

Route

The main route leading up to the summit is the Gorham Mountain Trail. A short distance up, one can choose to take the Cadillac Cliffs Trail, which promises a rougher and more strenuous hike to the top.

Red Tape

An entrance fee will be required to enter the park and reach the Gorham Mountain Trail parking area.

When to Climb

Acadia National Park is popular throughout the warmer months. This mountain is considered "moderate" and could be safely hiked by an experienced climber in winter.
