Re: Good stuff man!

Couldn't have made it to the start without you! Hope you had fun ice climbing (w/ Vitaliy, right?). Glad you enjoyed the read, & see you again sometime on the East Side!

i feel your pain!

Tuolumne in winter condition is beautiful...however, the trudge to get up there is not one I would recommend anyone, and even more demoralizing is the skin out. I did it last may and thankfully it was my last ski trip of the year, as looking at my ski boots after that caused pain.

We skied unicorn while up there, a winter ascent on cathedral would have been nice. way to go guys!

Re: i feel your pain!

We were both wondering how many people make the trek up there. That might be the last time I see Tuolumne in the winter. Good on you for making it up there, & for doing Unicorn Peak- that's a beautiful looking formation too!

Re: i feel your pain!

the log in the ski hut was nice to check out, gave the idea. there are a few families it looks like, who do it annually. Unicorn makes for an excellent, albeit short, ski descent. The descent potential near Cockscomb looked pretty neat if it weren't for the cornices of doom over everything surrounding that bowl. I certainly won't be back unless I somehow can spend a full week up there probing about, and if Lembert were skiable!

Touloumne Hut ?s

Dirk, sounds like a fun trip. I am planning a trip in there next week (we are not bringing climbing gear other than approach shoes) and have some questions:

Is there cell reception at the hut? We are trying to get in there before the weather pattern changes but are planning to stay for four or five days and might have to leave early if big storms are perdicted, so we want to stay abreast of weather forcasts.

What cooking implements are at the hut? Last time I was there there was an electric range and electric outlets at the hut, as well as cooking utensils; are they still there?

Dirk, or anyone, what domes can be climbed easily in the winter in approach shoes? I have climbed in Touloumne in the summer so I am familiar with the area, but many of the walk offs we did are not something I would look foward to hike up in the winter. Does anyone have any suggestions for easy dome climbs/hikes.

Thanks in advance for your advice, H.

Re: Touloumne Hut ?s

I wouldn't count on cel reception- I think I checked once & I didn't have any (I have AT&T, though, so I wasn't expecting anything). There's an electric stove at the hut, but I want to say in the Tuolumne winter update the rangers provide they said that they weren't anticipating working phones or electricity for the remainder of the winter (i.e. I'd bring a stove). There are some pots available for cooking there. Don't remember about any utensils. Lembert should be totally doable (see the photo I posted). Ditto with Pothole, though there's probably snow on it. Don't know how hard you're looking to do, either. Depending on your ambition/desire to suffer, the sky's the limit! Have fun.

This was an enjoyable read

I just put up an area ranges page on the Tioga Pass area and your trip report would definitely embellish the page!
Cheers. ND
