The Kite!A good looking one at that, but how do you keep it from breaking stuffed into your solidly packed day pack?

Re: The Kite! Thanks Marc! I've enjoyed this addition to my pack at times, and this was my favorite pic of that weekend.
The kite is a Prism Stowaway Diamond, I just ran across it in an REI and decided to get one. Made for backpacking actually so it is only about 4-5 ounces (suppose I need to weigh it myself) and packs down really small. I can put it in my outside pocket opposite my water bottle, or inside the pack.
My pack isn't normally that solidly packed even. Without a stove, 3 days of food, or an extra layer I have room to spare. Would like a 24-25 L pack but can't find one better than my 29.
The kite isn't all that durable... needed some duct tape on the pole tips on the third outing, but that was after numerous crashes on Shasta the trip before. Quite fun though!

Good Idea! A kite!I wish I'd thought of that.
Dealing with 'down time' on my longer trips was sometimes a minor issue with me. I usually brought a book, but sometimes if the book was too good, I'd waste a perfectly good climbing day reading it. Then I might finish it too early in the course of the trip and it would become dead weight.
I tried to teach myself to play harmonica a couple of times, but I got frustrated and it seemed just too 'noisy' and disrespectful to do that in such a pristine environment.
Some of the most enjoyable downtime I had was teaching myself to juggle. I would find some 'hardball' sized rocks and have at it. I got pretty good with 3 rocks, but I nearly gave myself a concussion a couple of times while trying to learn 4 rocks. (A helmet would have been useful...) :-)

Re: Good Idea! A kite!Yikes!
Yes I think a kite is a much better way to go than juggling rocks... plus the kite weighs a lot less Gordon!
