My brother and I made the shorthike Thanksgiving Day. My first in the flatlands of Oklahoma. Loved the wildlife in the refuge.

We basically charged up the northwestern aspect and stood below the summit boulder. It was a lot larger than expected--pictures don't prepare you for it.

Route Climbed: Elk Mountain Trail Date Climbed: Climbed twice in the 90's.  Sucess!

On one of the climbs up the Elk Mountain Trail my son and I crossed the top of Elk Mountain all the way to the Apple and Pear. From there we continued north and down the north face back to the trailhead parking lot. This is a great day hike involving some bouldering.

This is a great mountain for hiking, bouldering, etc. I did my first technical rock climbing on this mountain in the 1970s.

Late season summit. Carried a first aid kit, big baggie of gorp, five water bottles, and 17 seventh graders. This is one of the harder climbs that I have done.

The family and I hiked the mile or so to the top as practice for some hiking and climbing we were to do later in the season. Beautiful views from the top. I almost stepped on a bison laying in the middle of the trail just over the summit...he won, I moved.
