Overview

From the Hermann Gulch Trailhead the East Ridge is the most direct route up Bethel. For this reason only did we ever decide to head that way. The season is listed as winter/spring because I'm not sure of the conditions during the snow-free months (update later maybe?). This side of the mountain is wind loaded with snow and avalanche caution should be heeded due to a short steep section up the shoulder of the ridge.

Getting There

Herman Gulch exit. Just East of the Loveland Pass exit on I-70.

Route Description

Follow the marked trails up Herman Gulch until directly east of the East ridge. Head across the creek and uphill heading West keeping high on the rounded and wooded ridge until treeline. From here you will see the steep shoulder that begins the summit ridge. Choose your route up the steep snow or along the rocks to reach the tame ridge above. Continue 200 ft and 1/4 mile to the summit.

Essential Gear

Snowshoe approach. In proper snow conditions you will want crampons, and ice axe. In worse conditions don't forget the beacon, shovel and probe.
