fun weekend
stayed at Drake Fire Lookout and hiked up to the top the following morning. Neat area. Saturday night brought storms and rain, but we awoke to clear skies.

Drake x2
Camped at Mud Creek camp ground and was excited to get this one knocked off early as to hit a few more that day. My computer was dying after the three day road trip so I didn't turn it on and thought I would climb this one by memory. I went to the top where the lookout is and remembered that Drake was actually the next one over. So I went over to the next one thinking it was Drake. When standing on top I thought the peak further east looked taller but then I found the bench mark that said DRAKE PEAK!!!!!!!! So I left thinking I had bagged both Light and Drake Peak.
I then drove to Crane Mountain and looked back to the North. Immediately I realized that I had been fooled.
I have to admit, it did cross my mind to consider Draked bagged and take it to my grave. Then the eagle scout in the back of my mind convinced me to head back. So after a few hours lost I headed back, parked on top Light Peak then climbed over to Drake. It was an awesome ridge walk with a cool summit so I am glad I went. I would like to say though, Screw benchmark namers, screw Light Peak, and screw eagle scouts. Drake Peak bagged!

Cautious with my tires
Parked at treeline just as the road narrows, about one mile short of Light Peak. Hiked over Light Peak, down to shoulder, then up to Drake Peak summit. Clear skies, calm air, excellent views. Joined by my canine, Rudi.

Nice short hike
Hiked over the top of Light Peak from where we had camped and then down, down, down and then back up to Drake's summit. I found a Richard Carey-Barbara Lilley register. Did I sign it? It was hidden nicely in one of their traditional red can containers.
Nice views in all directions and I walked back to campsite by sidehilling LightPeak on the return. 4 miles roundtrip.

Hiked from Light Peak
Parked on top of Light Peak and hiked down and across to Drake. The drive from Bend was epic, long long day of driving.

West ridge
Bagged this one at the end of the long weekend after picking off several of Oregon's 2000-foot prominences. Parked on the east side of Light Peak, but stopped on a shoulder instead of driving all the way to the saddle. After the hike the rear window of my 4Runner refused to close at first, and with all that dirt and gravel roads plus 2-3 hundred miles of highway driving ahead of me, it was looking like a nightmare scenario. However, after starting the engine the window finally, haltingly closed, and I didn't lower it again for months until I decided to get it fixed. The hazards of driving old vehicles.

Drove over Light Peak to saddle. Hiked up treeline (trees are on north side of ridge; south side is open scrub) to top. It's a nice walk. The crux is 4-wheeling back to the top of Light Peak.
