Can anyone verify that one of these two high peaks ESE of Granite Peak is or is not Whitetail Peak? The direction is right but there are a lot of high peaks over that way. See below for the answer to this question (Whitetail is hidden behind the peak at center). July 13, 2003.

Looked at the map

Went west of Whitetail and ran into Castle rock and castle rock spire. Might be these since Castle Rock mtn is a tad higher. Good picture regardless

Re: Looked at the map

You know, I believe you're right, except I think it is Castle Mountain (12,604 ft) at center. Castle is the 3rd highest peak in Montana. In my picture above, I believe that craggy spire right of center is Castle Rock Spire.

I've centered this topo map on that spire.

The picture on page 8 of this link shows Castle Mountain from the opposite side (with the telltale red rock of Sundance Mountain to Castle's north visible in both my shot and the link shot).

I'll just have to resubmit this picture as soon as a peak page gets made for Castle Mountain or Castle Rock Spire. Being the 3rd and the 5th-highest peaks in the state, they ought to have the honor. Montana's highest peaks.

mystery peaks

Yeah, you're mostly right. That big flat peak in the center IS Castle Mountain (12,612--Montana's 3rd highest) and Castle Rock Spire is to the right. The spire itself, I have somethimes heard referred to as the Shark Fin, and the name--Castle Rock Spire--applies mainly to the peak itself. At 12,540 feet, it's the 6th highest in the state. The edge of Castle Rock Mountain can be seen at the far right edge of the picture.
