Oak Creek Canyon is a 15-mile long, 2,500' deep notch cut into the edge
of Arizona's Mogollon Rim.
A million years of erosion along a geological fault line has created this
magnificent canyon.
Climate along the canyon changes significantly as elevation increases from
7200' at the Rim (where this photo was taken) to 4400 feet at the opposite
end of the canyon.
The higher elevation and shade along the Ponderosa pine forested upper canyon provides a cool respite from 90+ degree temps in the lower reaches near Sedona.
A dozen springs located along the canyon's length feed Oak Creek, which, in turn, supports the lush vegetation and diverse wildlife found along the
riparian habitat.
It's possible to spot black bear, elk, white-tailed deer and over 100 species of birds.
There's also 49 "fishable" miles along the creek where Rainbow and Brown
trout can be found.
And, don't forget the unforgettable swimming at Slide Rock State Park.
