Cute......but not cuddly. Nice photo. Any showing the whole web (from further away)?
What is the spider's natural range? Widespread or not? Thanks for a good wildlife pic.

Re: Cute...Thanks for looking, Ogre! It is widespread in much of North American (doesn't do the Rockies or the Great Basin, though). I also believe that the argiopes are seen worldwide.
I did try to take an image with the spider on a dampened web. I used a fine mist to spray the web, but that made Argiope skittish and he ran into hiding. I could have, but didn't, take an image of the entire web. But, if that's important to you, PM me with an e-mail address. I know where this guy lives and can go back and get one! ;-) --mark d.

Re: Cute...You don't need to go out of your way, but thanks for offering... :) When I get around to it, I'll put up a nice spider photo I took a couple months ago. I'll pm you to let you know. Thanks again for the nice post. There are so many landscape photos here, and rightfully so, but I like to see wildlife as well.

spiderI love this shot. I have similar ones of the same type of spider, and one shot, made with a macro lens, has that colorful back filling the view in enough detail to see the dew on it. I'm glad to see someone else is willing to get so close to spiders, which I think are fascinating and beautiful creatures. I don't even kill the ones in my house; they get taken outside.

Re: spiderThe only ones I find in my house are fiddlebacks (brown recluse). They're just too dangerous, so I do kill them. All others are safe, even the black widow that lives in the wall just outside my garage door. As long as he stays outside. --mark d.

Re: Hi !Thanks, Sajama. But I can be just as startled as the next person by a spider suddenly appearing on me! I do respect the important role they play in nature. --mark d.

great spider!I love the lighting in this shot, which I know is hard to get right. Super spider, makes me want to bring her home (not).
