Warmup hike for an unsuccessful attempt on Jefferson the following day. This is a hike I had long considered as Belknap was one of the first Oregon mountain pages to appear on summitpost many years ago. This mountain has a fairly large crater at the summit, and pretty spectacular views to the north and south.

Just before winter closure
Lovely day hike on a cold fall day. Took the sandy climb straight up the side on the way up, circled around on a better use trail on the descent.

Lot's of lava and scree
Climbed Belknap using the approach from hwy 242. This route uses the Pacific Crest Trail which crosses a long section of lava. The climb up the mountain is in steep, loose scree. I also summitted Little Belknap on this trip. The views are awsome, a person can see many Cascade Peaks.

Belknap Crater
I’m glad there was a trail through the lava fields. The dark rock really heats up in the afternoon. The final climb up Belknap Crater was not very fun but going down was fast. Went to Little Belknap and checked out the caves there.

something of everything
The wife and I really appreciated the CCC trail over the lava -- I can't imagine that hike otherwise. Great lava tubes to the east, on the way up.

set out to climb Belknap Crater, climbed Little Belknap instead (from McKenzie Pass)
My brother Eric and I were driving back to Provo, Utah after attending our brother Harold's wedding in Portland. I talked Eric into a hike along the PCT with the goal of climbing Belknap Crater. He couldn't spare the time required so I settled for Little Belknap and we explored the Lava Tubes that had some snow in them near the entrances

Cornvallis (see post below) and I hiked up both little and big Belknap. Nice. Not the greatest views, the weather couldn't decide if it was coming or going. Incredibly windy!!! There was a group of four going up after us and one of the girls was in a cotton mini-skirt and t-shirt. I don't know how she got up the nasty scree slog as far as she did.

Hiked along with Little Belknap. Very cool section of PCT over miles of lava, feel sorry for the trail builders. Extremely windy on top, approaching the time we chased off of Whitney. Great views, you can almost see the lava flowing. Gave a PCT through hiker from NC a ride down to Sisters to re-supply.

Climbed this many times since and almost every time I go over the Hwy 242 pass. Very interesting multi-cratered cone with great views of the Sisters and Washington.

I hiked this after doing Little Belknap Crater. It reminded me more of the beach than a mountain until I got to the top. The craters below the summit are pretty neat. Quite windy at the top. I could see from Jefferson to Diamond Peak. I could also see a forest fire burning north of Black Butte. Following the lava flows to their source at Little Belknap was the highlight of this one for me. Neat lava tubes (caves). Looking at the age differences of different lava flows from Belknap's summit was also pretty cool.

Nice warm day but not too hot.
Took the side trip to Little Belknap and poked around the small caves.
Visited with a PCT thru hiker.
