Two surprises at the top  Sucess!

Views were outstanding and clear from the lookout, however, the facility wasn't staffed (on a Sunday) and therefore the balcony access grate was locked. A colony of hornets have also taken up residence in the lookout's floorboards... visitors be warned.

It was a pity that the Domeland still hasn't really recovered from the fire 17 years ago. Spoke with an old-timer who remembered when that area was a sea of green with shining towers poking out.

Drive Up  Sucess!

Drove up here after a dayhike to Kern Peak from the Blackrock Trailhead. Cool views of Domelands from the summit.

Mostly a drive up  Sucess!

Didn't get the van up all the way, but it was still only about a mile to the summit. Trip Report.

There for the adjacent wilderness area HP  Sucess!

Bob Packard and I ascended this peak en route to Kern Peak's trailhead, primarily in order to summit the Domeland Wilderness Area's HP, which is a mere 1 minute walk to the east. This moved us up on Peakbagger.com's FRL list for Calif's Wilderness area HP's, where I am now tenth with 53 of the 148 HP's, and Bob is 16th with 48. The wilderness area HP itself is rather obscure - we went to the small knob which is about 50 yds east of the summit road on the ridge, as well as went to the exact GPS point we plotted for the site. Near there I left a small register book in a jar in the top of a vertical plastic pipe. Peakbagger and my own waypoint plot the WHP at about 36° 1' 11'' N; 118° 15' 10'' W
36.019591, -118.252673 (Dec Deg)
387125E 3986847N Zone 11 (UTM
The observer stationed in the lookout let us up briefly, despite a lightning storm just north which we discovered the next day left an inch or more of hail on the trail leading to Kern Peak.

Re: There for the adjacent wilderness area HP

The Domeland Wilderness HP is actually higher and many miles from Bald Mtn.

Drive up  Sucess!

Climbed summer 2004. Good views, but not really a hike considering you can drive to the base of the lookout.

Wow  Sucess!

Absolutely loved this hike... for the wildflowers, the trees, the chat with the fire lookout, and especially for the view! I think this is the best view to be had in the entire southern Sierra.
