Arrival at the Oberwalderhütte
The Oberwalderhütte is a fine alpine hut in the Glockner Group. The normal route starts at Franz-Josefshöhe, along the Gamsgrubenweg, over the Wasserwinkel glacer and finally a short steep trail up the Großer Burgstall, a former rock island. The food is fine, there are hot showers and there are many possibilities for relatively easy alpine climbs.
Mind you, the surrounding glaciers have some seriously crevassed areas, so you have to be careful, especially if there is some snow. However, late in summer, the Wasserwinkel glacier is often free of snow and can then be crossed without roping up.
